Mark Takes Crime Cutting Campaign to Our High Streets5.40.59pm GMT Thu 1st Feb 2007 Last Weekend Mark Hunter MP and local Lib Dem team held "We Can Cut Crime" street stalls in Cheadle Hulme, Cheadle, Bramhall as part of the national Lib Dem cutting crime campaign. The campaign was launched earlier this month by Party Leader Sir Menzies Campbell MP. The Lib Dem campaign is about promoting effective solutions to the problem of crime and anti-social behaviour. As part of the campaign, the Liberal Democrats have unveiled an effective five point plan to tackle crime - 1) More police on patrol - don't waste billions on ID Cards 2) Take back our Town Centres - let communities close pubs and clubs that cause trouble. 3) Make sentences mean what they say - Life should mean life 4) Compulsory work and training in prison - to cut re-offending 5) Better compensation for victims - paid for by prison work At the street stalls, Mark and the Lib Dem team were on hand to explain how Lib Dem plans would see local people taking back their communities. Mark also collected hundreds of signatures in support of his "Stop the Police Cuts" campaign. Cheadle Constituency MP Mark Hunter and his Hazel Grove colleague Andrew Stunell MP have now collected nearly 4,000 signatures for their campaign which began after the Labour Government cut 216 police officers from Greater Manchester Police. Speaking about the crime campaign, Mark Hunter MP said; "It was important to take this campaign to our High Streets as local people are fed up with living in fear of crime. Labour and the Conservatives talk tough on crime but successive governments have cut police numbers in our area. If we are to tackle the anti-social behaviour that is blighting our village centres and the surrounding areas then we need more police not fewer!" Mark has taken the police cuts campaign to the floor of the House of Commons and is waiting to question the Prime Minister about the £27 million funding shortfall.
