Mark along with Lib Dem colleagues (including Euro candidate Cllr Helen Foster-Grime) have been campiagning for the A555 Relief Road for many years

Cheadle MP Mark Hunter has greeted news announced by Stockport Council this morning that the financial package needed for the A555 Relief Road scheme to go ahead has now been confirmed, as a 'triumph' for local people.

The Cheadle MP commenting on the news said "I am not altogether surprised by the announcement because I know that the Town Hall have been pulling out all the stops to get this funding package agreed for some time. The process has involved a considerable amount of careful negotiation between Stockport, neighbouring local authorities, Manchester Airport and the Regional Development Agency.

"Alongside many thousands of local residents, I have campaigned for this Relief Road as an absolute key priority for our area over many years and I am delighted at this victory.

"After much pressure and direct lobbying from local MPs, including myself, the Government committed to spending £165 million earlier this year and now the Council has been able to find the rest of the money needed for the scheme to go ahead.

"This is absolutely tremendous news and will be much welcomed by all the many residents whose lives are currently blighted by excessive traffic using our residential roads. I have always been firmly convinced that the completion of the Relief Road was essential to improve the quality of life of those residents and I'm sure they will be equally thrilled that it has finally got the go-ahead."
